Backup Cameras

A backup camera is a wide-angle, weather-sealed digital camera typically mounted near the rear license plate or integrated into the trunk handle. It uses a Complementary Metal-Oxide-Semiconductor (CMOS) sensor designed for high sensitivity in low-light conditions. As a government-mandated safety feature in many regions, its primary purpose is to eliminate the "blind zone" directly behind the vehicle where small children or objects might be hidden from the mirrors. The camera is activated automatically when the vehicle's gear selector is moved into "Reverse." The video feed is transmitted—usually via a shielded coaxial cable to prevent interference—to the dashboard's infotainment screen. Most systems overlay "dynamic gridlines" on the video; these colored lines move as the steering wheel turns, showing the driver the predicted path of the car and helping with precise parallel parking or trailer hitching. Because they are exposed to road salt, mud, and rain, backup cameras are built to high IP-ratings for water resistance. However, the most common "failure" is simply a dirty lens, which can blur the image significantly. More advanced systems, known as "360-degree" or "Bird's Eye" views, use four separate cameras and a powerful processor to "stitch" the images together, giving the driver a top-down view of the entire vehicle's surroundings.
