Door panels, or "door cards," are complex interior assemblies that serve as the interface between the passengers and the vehicle's structural doors. Beyond their aesthetic role of covering the raw metal and mechanical components, they are engineered for safety, sound deadening, and ergonomics. They are typically constructed from a rigid plastic or composite base, layered with foam for impact protection and finished with materials like vinyl, fabric, or leather to match the cabin's theme. The panel houses several critical controls and amenities, including the window switches, door release handle, power lock buttons, and often the side-mirror adjustment joystick. Behind the panel, a "vapor barrier" (a thin plastic sheet) is used to prevent rainwater that leaks past the window seals from entering the cabin. The panel also contains a large speaker grille and often integrated storage bins or map pockets for passenger convenience. Door panels are designed to be removable to allow for the servicing of internal parts like the window motor, door latch, or lock actuator. They are usually held in place by a combination of hidden screws and "Christmas tree" plastic clips that "pop" into holes in the door's metal frame. If these clips are damaged during removal, the panel may develop annoying "rattles" or "creaks" during driving, which can significantly degrade the perceived quality of the vehicle's interior.
