Brake pads are the replaceable friction components within a disc brake system that physically contact the spinning rotors to slow the vehicle down. Located inside the brake caliper, these pads consist of a thick layer of friction material bonded to a heavy-duty steel backing plate. Their primary job is to endure extreme pressure and intense heat while gripping the rotor, converting the car’s kinetic energy into thermal energy to bring the wheels to a halt. There are three main types of friction materials used in brake pads, each offering different performance characteristics. Organic pads are made from fibers and resins, offering a quiet, soft feel ideal for daily city driving. Semi-metallic pads contain metal shavings for better heat dissipation and durability, making them great for heavy-duty or high-speed use. Finally, ceramic pads are the premium choice, known for being extremely quiet, long-lasting, and producing very little of the unsightly dark "brake dust" that often coats car wheels. Over time, the friction material on the pads naturally wears away through constant use, requiring periodic replacement to ensure safety. Most pads are equipped with a small metal "wear indicator" that creates a high-pitched squealing noise when the material gets dangerously thin, alerting the driver that it’s time for maintenance. Keeping these pads in good condition is vital, as worn-out pads can eventually damage the expensive metal rotors or, in extreme cases, lead to a total loss of braking power
