Spoilers

Car spoilers are aerodynamic wings or panels attached to a vehicle to "spoil" unfavorable air movement across the body. Their primary purpose is to reduce lift and increase downforce, which pushes the tires harder against the road to improve stability and grip, especially at high speeds. While often seen as a sporty accessory, they are functional tools designed to manage the airflow that naturally tries to lift a car off the ground as it moves faster. There are several distinct types of spoilers tailored for different performance goals. Rear spoilers are the most common, sitting on the trunk or roof to disrupt the vacuum of air that creates drag behind the car. Front spoilers (or air dams) are mounted under the front bumper to block air from flowing underneath the chassis, where it can cause turbulence. More aggressive designs, like pedestal wings, sit high above the trunk to catch cleaner, faster-moving air for maximum cornering traction. Beyond performance, spoilers play a major role in a vehicle's fuel efficiency and aesthetics. By smoothing out the air as it leaves the back of the car, a well-designed spoiler can reduce drag, allowing the engine to work less at highway speeds. In the modern car market, they are also a key styling element, giving sedans and hatchbacks a more aggressive, "race-inspired" look even if they rarely reach the speeds where the aerodynamic benefits truly kick in.
